Kiriteswari is the oldest, holiest, and a famous religious place of Murshidabad district. The previous name of Kiriteswari was Kireetkana. Kireet means the crown. Kireetkana or Kiriteswari is mentioned in the Vabisyapuran, a literature written in the medieval period. And it is also heard that in the time of Shankaracharya and the Gupta age the Kiriteswari had the existence.

KIRITESWARI TEMPLE COMPLEX:
Year of Erection;
It is heard that the old temple was erected in 1405 A.D. The present temple was erected in the first phase of 18th century by Bangadhikari Darpanarayana Roy. Location: Four miles from Dahapara and Khosbag, under Nabagram police station. Description: In this complex 16 temples of different deities are at present surviving. Historical Importance: It is said that when the dead body Sati, carried by Mahadeva (Shiva), her crown fell here.

One Shiva temple whose only the structure is found now-a-days, had an inscription in which the time of construction of the temple is mentioned. According to that inscription it was of 1465-66 A.D. and erected by Raghunath, son of Savaram.
