It was only 15 miles away from Murshidabad, the then capital of Bengal, Bihar and Orrisa which required 650,000 metric tons of food grains for the residents of this area. The Government also collected the revenue of Rs.-300,000/- in every year before 1743 A.D. The importance of this port further increased towards the end of eighteenth century on account of import of cotton to Bengal from the North- Western provinces. Bhagwangola was so important to the Nawabs of Bengal that, it was secured by a ditch and military. In 1743 Bhagwangola was attacked four times by the Maratha (Borgi). |
